About Greg

Greg Hogan’s interest in forging began with a slightly unexpected introduction to the craft. When his teenage son joined a Viking re-enactment group, Greg became curious about how the weapons and tools of the era were made. That curiosity soon turned into a passion for working with hot metal.

Inspired initially by traditional weaponry, Greg’s first pieces were daggers and axes, made using a homemade coal-fired forge and recycled steel. As his skills developed, he imported a gas forge, opening up more opportunities to experiment with different steels, forging techniques and forms.

Today, Greg continues to work primarily from his home forge in the Waikato, creating everything from hand-forged knives and practical homewares to sculptural and decorative pieces. His work includes Japanese-inspired chef’s knives, hunting knives and custom blades, along with forged door handles, candlesticks, pizza cutters and increasingly adventurous sculptural pieces that combine forged steel with natural materials such as stone and timber.

Greg particularly enjoys the hands-on nature of the process — taking a piece of raw or recycled metal and, through heat, hammer and patience, transforming it into something with purpose, character and a life of its own.

Traditional forging methods and careful heat treatment are used to develop strength and performance in his blades, while experimentation with different steels, finishes and techniques creates the distinctive textures and subtle colour variations found in his work.

Greg regularly exhibits at events including Raglan Arts Weekend, where his work has attracted a growing following. While every piece is made by hand, no two are quite the same — and that is very much part of the appeal.
